How to Prep for Newborn Sessions
There's nothing more precious than a newborn baby, and, as much as we may wish for it, all the tiny cuteness just doesn't last forever. Newborn photos are a great reminder of this special time and are wonderful memories to look back on for years to come.
Preparing your newborn for their first professional photo session doesn't have to be a challenge. Here are some tips to help you get started.
If possible plan your photo session around your newborn's feeding schedule to avoid having to run off mid-session to feed. A milk-drunk baby is a happy baby.
Types of Session
Do you love the look of poised portraits, do you prefer a lifestyle photoshoot, or perhaps a mixture of both? Some photographers are willing to accommodate exactly what you want while others prefer to run their own show. Rather than asking a photographer to change their style to fit your needs, choose a photographer who consistently takes the types of photos you like.
If you have a special family heirloom, a handmade baby blanket, or a special prop you'd like your baby next to be sure to inform your photographer so they can incorporate it into their creative process.
Hats, bows, and headbands are great accessories that can compliment and create a theme for a photo shoot. Simplicity is key!
Outfits & Wraps
Most newborns prefer to be swaddled in a wrap or blanket. A tight swaddle can help prevent the newborn from wiggling out of a pose. When choosing an outfit keep it simple- avoid busy patterns and overly bright colors to compliment the newborn, not draw attention away.
Bowls, Baskets, and Buckets
Props such as bowls, baskets, and buckets are versatile and can help add interest and depth to your photos. With proper support, a newborn baby can be placed in many different props allowing you to be creative.
Always remember, if you have questions don't be afraid to reach out to your photographer before your photoshoot!
